Temporary marriage commissioner

How it works

Temporary marriage commissioners are appointed for one day to perform a civil (non-religious) marriage ceremony.

An applicant for a temporary marriage commissioner appointment:

  • must be eligible to be appointed
  • is appointed for one day
  • is only authorized to perform a civil (non-religious) marriage ceremony
  • is not permitted to charge a fee to perform a marriage
  • is not permitted to represent themselves as a permanent marriage commissioner or solicit business of this nature

There is no cost to become a temporary marriage commissioner.

What’s important to know

The marriage commissioner program is not for a person registered with a religious body as a clergy/religious representative. Read more about registering as a religious marriage officiant to perform religious marriages in Alberta.
