As part of its commitment to increase accountability and transparency, the government is reviewing the province’s information access and privacy law.  Public meetings will be held across the province beginning June 14. The consultation closes July 31.

The 2010/2011 Annual Report on the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act was tabled in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on December 21, 2012.

The Access and Privacy Conference 2012 was held on June 13-15, 2012 at the Edmonton Marriot River Cree Resort.  The Conference featured workshops, insightful keynote, and plenary speakers, such as Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner Jill Clayton, Jennifer Stoddart, Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and Gary Dickson, Saskatchewan Information and Privacy Commissioner.  Minister Bhullar of Service Alberta provided greetings to welcome delegates to the Conference.  There were also interesting breakout sessions on a number of different topics.  To check it out please visit the conference webpage.

The FOIP: Focus on Privacy interactive online course for employees of public bodies to increase basic awareness of Alberta's FOIP Act has been updated with improved content and some great new features. These features include a Certificate of Completion participants can print when they finish the course! An email can also be sent to the participant confirming their completion.

November 16, 2010

On April 13, 2010, the Legislative Assembly of Alberta appointed the Standing Committee on Health as the all-party special committee to review the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, as required under section 97 of the Act. The Committee's report (PDF) on the review was tabled in the Alberta Legislature on November 15, 2010.

September 8, 2010

As of September 1, 2010, the Health Information Amendment Act, 2009 is in force. Key amendments include an expansion of the scope of the Health Information Act to include a broader category of health information and a change in who is designated as a "custodian" under the Act. Regulated members of health professions are now designated as custodians through Regulation. Custodians include physicians, pharmacists, optometrists, opticians, chiropractors, midwives, podiatrists and denturists. Dentists and dental hygienists will become custodians on March 1, 2011, and registered nurses on September 1, 2011. Public bodies that employ a health professional who is a "custodian" to a provide a "health service" will need to consider whether the amendments affect their operations.  For more information, see  the OIPC News Release and Guide.

The Legislative Assembly's all-party Standing Committee on Health is seeking public input on its review of the FOIP Act. See the Call for Written Submissions (PDF) notice for details. The submissions deadline is June 30, 2010.

FOIP News Issue No. 28 (PDF) is now available! FOIP News is an electronic newsletter that highlights news relating to Alberta's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. This issue includes information on the review of the FOIP Act and an update on the amendments to the Personal Information Protection Act. It also includes a summary of recent OIPC Orders and Investigation Reports, and much more.

The Legislative Assembly of Alberta has appointed an all-party special committee to review the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, as required under section 97 of the Act. The committee must begin its review by July 1, 2010 and submit its report to the Assembly within one year. Visit the committee's website (external link) where information such as meeting dates and transcripts will be posted when that information becomes available.

Six new entities created under the Alberta Research and Innovation Act have been designated as public bodies subject to the FOIP Act, effective February 3, 2010 (A.R. 8/2010). These entities are: Alberta Innovates - Bio Solutions, Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions, Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions, Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures, Alberta Research and Innovation Authority and Alberta Research and Innovation Committee.
