Investigating a Consumer Complaint - How the Process Works

For immediate release, Edmonton, October 13, 2000

Albertans who feel they have been a victim of unethical marketing or business practices can get the facts on how to file a consumer complaint and what to expect from the investigation process in a new brochure designed to increase consumer awareness.

"Our job is to help ensure a fair marketplace through our legislation, monitoring, enforcement and awareness activities," said Government Services Minister Patricia Nelson, whose department is responsible for consumer services.

"We have legislation in place that is tough, but fair and last year completed more than 1,600 investigations on behalf of Albertans, but let's face it, we can't enforce these rules if people aren't aware of where to call and ask for help," said Nelson. "This brochure is one way to get that information into the hands of Albertans."

Investigating Your Consumer Complaint, a guide to the consumer investigation process, is now available in Alberta Government Services field offices, on the department website and by calling our toll-free Consumer Information Centre.

The brochure outlines the consumer complaint process from beginning to end, including what triggers an investigation, how the investigation process works, possible outcomes and when alternative action such as civil proceedings may be necessary.

"As part of our commitment to consumer protection, it is important that Albertans have a better idea of their rights as consumers and how to seek help if they feel they've been treated unfairly -- our goal as always is to promote a fair marketplace for everyone in the province," said Nelson.

For copies of the brochure or further information on consumer-related information, Albertans can visit our website at www.gov.ab.ca/gs or call our Consumer Information Centre toll-free at 1-877-427-4088.
