Business Model
The Government of Alberta and its partners use a progressive business model to operate the Alberta SuperNet:
- Unique public-private partnership (P3)
- Government of Alberta invested $193 million – has indefeasible right of use (IRU) for the SuperNet’s extended area network:
- Financed by the Government of Alberta and managed by Axia SuperNet Ltd. as its contracted operator
- Made up of 402 smaller communities; holds about 1/3 of Alberta’s population
- Financed by the Government of Alberta and managed by Axia SuperNet Ltd. as its contracted operator
- Bell Canada invested $102 million – owns the SuperNet’s base area network:
- Financed, owned and managed by Bell
- Made up of 27 urban communities; holds about 2/3 of Alberta’s population
- Acts as the SuperNet’s backbone
- Financed, owned and managed by Bell
- Internet service providers connect to the extended area network
- Facilitate government, learning, health, libraries and municipal (GoA/LHLM) and commercial traffic
