Identity Theft

Karen’s poster message “don’t get stolen” is illustrated by a crowd of people wearing face masks to protect their identities from theft. Her questionnaire response demonstrated an excellent knowledge of identity theft and listed the steps consumers need to take to ensure they do not become victims of this crime.

Cell Phone Contracts

Brittany’s poster humorously cautions young consumers “not to get burned by extra cell phone fees”. Her questionnaire response demonstrated a strong knowledge of potential cell phone contract terms and fees consumers need to be aware of. Brittany also identified measures consumers can take to resolve problems with service providers.

The traffic signs in Chelsia’s poster display important information consumers need to be aware of when buying a car. Her questionnaire response demonstrated a solid  knowledge of the costs involved in purchasing a car and emphasized the importance of research before entering into an agreement.

For their Consumer Education Initiative that includes a variety of resources to help educate consumers about the obligations of real estate industry members in real estate transactions and to expand their understanding of buying and selling real estate.

Credit Counselling Services of Alberta

For "Money Mentors" - a financial management program educating consumers on personal money management and the wise use of credit.

Award of Distinction
Canadian Bankers Association

For “Your Money: Bringing Financial Literacy to Life” Program. This interactive one-hour seminar teaches teenage consumers about financial issues such as budgeting, post-secondary financing, starting a business, financial products and services.

Canadian Association of Movers

For the "Certified Canadian Mover" Program. This program certifies reputable, professional and ethical household moving and storage companies that meet the association’s certification requirements. Consumers are encouraged to use this service when choosing a moving company.

Medicine Hat News

For "Ask the Consultant" - a consumer column designed to educate consumers about deceptive or fraudulent classified ads such as advance fee loans and travel scams. As a result of this column, there have been fewer incidents of fraudulent ads appearing in the Medicine Hat News - demonstrating a positive impact for consumers and setting a higher standard for businesses.
