Permanent Marriage Commissioner Appointments
Marriage Commissioners are appointed by the Alberta Government to perform civil, non-religious, marriage ceremonies. There are over 200 marriage commissioners located throughout Alberta. Marriage commissioners are appointed for a five-year term.
Appointments are made to specific areas of the province as required. The need for an appointment is partially identified:
- When there is a population growth
- When there is an increase in civil marriages in a given area
- When there is a request from a particular district
- When an existing marriage commissioner retires
Individuals interested in being appointed as a marriage commissioner must contact Vital Statistics for an application.
The completed application must be submitted to Vital Statistics along with the following:
- A cover letter of introduction explaining the interest in the appointments and what the applicant has to offer the position
- A personal resume
- A letter outlining the facilities the applicant has available to be used to perform weddings, conduct interviews, etc.
Once an application is received by Vital Statistics, it will be held on file for future consideration.
